New Bar and Conservatory

We hope you enjoyed our previous blog post regarding the new kitchen. If you would like to read our kitchen blog post, please look here;

In January 2011 it was decided that along with refurbishing the kitchen we would refurbish the bar and conservatory at Appleby Manor Hotel, a leading Lake District Hotel, to make it more appealing to our guests. This is what the conservatory looked like before the refurbishment took place in January 2012;

Old Conservatory

It took a while for us to decide exactly what would be done, in the end after much research it was decided it would be made to feel more homely and more like a front room. The newly refurbished conservatory now has brand new pinoleum blinds which are made of real wood in France using an age old process. There is a new Axeminster carpet along with armchair like wicker furniture. The conservatory has fantastic views over Appleby castle, the Cumbrian fells and our Cumbria in Bloom award winning gardens which are not to be missed in spring and summer.

New Conservatory

The old bar was homely but lacked the space to make it an effective and appealing area, here is what the bar looked like before the refurbishment took place;

Old Bar

It was decided that the bar service area would be completely stripped out and replaced to make it more functional and eye pleasing. The bar now consists of a solid oak counter that was sourced locally from KBS contracts, a company in Kendal and was built by Kirkland Kitchens, also of Kendal who are regularly tasked to build £60 – 100k kitchens. With the new bar came an increased working area which means that it is now able to accommodate a new sink, an ice machine and more barrels of beer. The walls have been papered using Harlequin wallpaper, the ceiling has been painted a lighter shade of green and the ceiling-rose and cornice have also been redecorated to make them more in keeping. The seating area has been carpeted with the same Axeminster carpet as the conservatory and finished off with plush velvet curtains and luxury tub chairs.

New Hotel Kitchen

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog about Appleby Manor Country House, a 4* Lake District Hotel. We hope that you will enjoy what we have to say, please leave comments to give us feedback and share these posts on social networking sites if you like them.

In January 2011 it was decided by the Hotel that we would upgrade our kitchen facilities so that we could provide a better and more consistent service to our guests. It took the kitchen team several months to decide exactly what format the new kitchen would take, in the end it was decided that we would move away from gas stoves and go 100% electric, thereby making the kitchen safer and more efficient. To maximise energy efficiency it was decided to use induction cookers as the backbone of the Kitchen.

Induction cookers are energy efficient as they only use power when a special type of pan is placed on them. This is as the result of magnets that detect when a pan has been placed on the stove and thus provides power and heat to that stove. The wonders of induction cookers are that once this pan has been taken off, the magnet disengages and completely cuts off power and heat to that stove, thereby instantly cooling the cooking surface to make it safe to touch. As the special pans have magnetic properties, the heating effect is concentrated in a thin layer near the surface, thus making the heating effect stronger.

Induction cookers are incredibly complicated so I have only touched on the brief details of how the cookers work. If you are intrigued by this, then why not take a look at this information page on Wikipedia about induction cooking;

The induction cookers that have been installed in our kitchen are the first of their kind to be manufactured in the UK. The cooking stoves were all made in the UK, with the exception of the induction tops which are Swiss in origin but have been encased in British carcases. We are proud to be supporting British manufacturing. The kitchen also contains a revolutionary 180o rotating hot oven to allow all the space within the kitchen to be utilised to its full potential.

The refurbishment of the kitchen was completed on the 14th Jan 2012 and was both on time and on budget. The end result is fantastic; these new stoves have given the chefs much more control over the cooking process and the consistency of the food. So far we have not managed to burn anything.
